626 Royal Street
FRENCH QUARTER | NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
626 Royal Street was built between 1795 and 1800, according notarial acts found in the Historic New Orleans Collection’s Collins C. Diboll surveys. The Creole townhouse historically functioned as a commercial space at the first level and apartments at the second level. 626 Royal has functioned as a surgeon dentist’s office, a photography studio, and a typewriter repair shop.
It retains its original use and layout via its character defining porte-cochere, inner courtyard, stairways and balconies. The building retains almost all of its character defining features with modern updates confined mostly to the bathrooms and kitchens. The traditional red stucco façade, dentil cornice, French doors and ornament ironwork contribute to a streetscape that is distinctive to the French Quarter. It is architecturally significant and a contributing structure to the Vieux Carre’s Historic District.
